Core Faculty Position in Urban Studies

B.A. in Liberal Studies Program

 

 

Antioch University Los Angeles is accepting applications for a full-time Core Faculty position in Urban Studies in the BA in Liberal Studies Program.

 

This is a fulltime core faculty position (unranked) in a B.A. in Liberal Studies degree completion program.  The teaching load at Antioch University Los Angeles is 24 quarter credit units, with reassigned time and/or course release as appropriate.  This position is for a person who will oversee the concentration in Urban Community & Environment and related aspects of the curriculum, and will have expertise in the field.  This person, like all members of the B.A. faculty, will also have responsibilities in the on-going development and administration of the B.A. in Liberal Studies Program. 

 

The B.A. in Liberal Studies Program offers areas of concentration in Urban Community & Environment, Creative Writing, Child Studies, Psychology, Business, and Liberal Studies.  Each area of concentration is made up of interdisciplinary core and elective courses deemed appropriate for a Liberal Studies degree.  At Antioch, curriculum delivery models vary, with classes held during the day, evening, and weekend hour. The overall curriculum places emphasis on education in relation to social and ethical values.  The program is designed to meet the needs of returning students and working adults.  Antioch values highly interactive pedagogic practices that combine theory and practice with experiential learning.  The program places a strong emphasis on critical thinking, analysis, problem solving, and effective writing and oral communication.  

 

Faculty workload includes responsibilities in the four (4) areas approved by the University Leadership Council (ULC): Engagement in Student Learning; Engagement in Scholarship; Engagement in Service/Practice; and Engagement as a University Citizen.

 

The core faculty position reports to the Chair of the B.A. Program and is responsible for teaching, student advising, involvement in program and campus activities, and contributions to the profession and/or academic discipline.

 

Required Skills:

An earned Ph.D. or terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution in urban studies or a field relevant to the interdisciplinary study of the city, including history, political science, sociology, humanities, environmental studies, political economy, the arts.

 

·         At least three years of teaching experience at the college or university level, with demonstration of good teaching evaluations.

·         A student-centered orientation, with strong interpersonal and communication skills. Experience working with adult learners is desired, as well as a familiarity with adult learning models.  Must be able to facilitate a highly interactive and participatory classroom. 

·         Must be able to work collaboratively in a small faculty setting and support enrollment maintenance as well as academic activities.

·         A demonstrated involvement in the community.

 

Work Schedule:  This is a fulltime position at 100% effort.  Courses are offered for 10 weeks for four academic quarters per year.  Faculty have one week vacation between quarters.  Fulltime faculty are expected to post five (5) office hours in which they are expected to be on campus.

 

Compensation and Benefits:  Salary is dependent on placement on the Antioch Core Faculty Salary Schedule which is determined by education and amount of prior teaching and professional experience.  Benefits include medical, dental and vision insurance, prescription drug service, life insurance, paid holidays, sick and vacation leave, and retirement plan.  Employees are eligible to apply for a tuition benefit after one year of employment.

 

While Antioch Core Faculty are normally unranked, individuals wishing to do so may apply for rank as Assistant, Associate and Full Professor.
