POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES
The Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños (Centro), the
only University-based research institute in the United States devoted to the
interdisciplinary study of the Puerto Rican experience, seeks a researcher with
expertise in any one of the wide range of disciplines within history, the
social sciences or behavioral sciences, including those interdisciplinary in
nature, to complement its current research capacity.
The Research Associate responsibilities include but are
not limited to:
• Conduct research and disseminate findings in
subjects such as Puerto Rican popular culture; 20th century Puerto Rican
history in the United States; applied social sciences regarding Puerto
Rican/Latino communities in at least one of, but not limited to, the following
areas: economics, demography, urban planning, applied social research, social
policy, social welfare, social work and sociology; public health, or community
organizing;
• Write proposals and grants to fund research
projects;
• Produce and assist in drafting reports,
journal articles, policy briefs, press statements, opinion-editorials;
• Engage in collaborative research projects
with other Centro staff and have familiarity with interdisciplinary research
and methodologies;
• Support and perform other research and
policy related duties as assigned by the Director; and
• Participate on Centro-wide staff committees
as a volunteer or assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A Ph.D. (or related doctorate) is required and must
have demonstrated research ability.
The successful candidate will be self motivated, have
excellent organizational skills and must work effectively both as part of a
team and independently. Centro seeks a person with a strong commitment to the
Puerto Rican/Latino community and knowledge of the socioeconomic conditions of
Puerto Ricans/Latinos. S/he should have familiarity with both qualitative and
quantitative research methods in the social sciences and/or behavior sciences
or historical methods and Puerto Rican/Latino Studies. Other qualifications
include: professional and/or academic experience in history, the social
sciences, the behavioral sciences, or related interdisciplinary fields;
excellent research and writing skills; ability to manage a number of different projects
simultaneously, with varying degrees of responsibility and priority; to meet
deadlines; self motivation; and accept and incorporate on feedback. Candidates
should also be familiar with the Centro's research agenda and research
principles (www.centropr.org/research.html). Bilingual English/Spanish writing skills a plus.
