Conference Presentation Formats

Full Papers

Description: Abstracts should be submitted that relate to any aspect of the African and African American, Hispanic and Latino, Native American or Asian experience. Subjects may include, but are not limited to: literature, demographics, history, politics, economics, education, health care, fine arts, religion, social sciences, business and many other subjects.

Presentation Time: 45 minutes.

Brief Papers

Description: These papers are more condensed presentations or work-in-progress research projects.

Presentation Time: 25 minutes

Panels

Description: Consisting of 3-5 people (including the chair). A panel presents its views on a common theme, issue or question related to the affiliated ethnic groups. The panel will also discuss the presentation with the audience and approach pertinent topics from a variety of viewpoints. In an effort to present differing viewpoints, it is required that panelists represent a variety of institutions, research projects or associations.

Submission Requirements: The chair of the panel must provide an abstract that includes the following: (1) introduction of the panel topic that includes its importance, originality, focus and timeliness; (2) expertise of the proposed panelists, panelists’ perspective titles, the organization he/she represents and order of presentation; and (3) the potential for informative and controversial discussion.

Presentation Time: 1 hour

Roundtable Paper Discussion

Description: This format is appropriate for papers, projects or works-in-progress that encourage discussion, allowing for maximum interaction in informal small group discussions on a single or related topic. Presenters will share a room with other presenters as papers are discussed in small groups concurrently. Audience members will be provided copies of roundtable papers.

Presentation Time: 1 hour

Demonstrations

Description: Presentations that show a specific teaching, testing, performance or other technique related to aspects of conference topics. After a brief description of the underlying theory, the demonstration session consists of showing how something is done. Presenters are encouraged to use materials that actively involve participants.

Presentation Time: 10 minutes

Demonstration Time: 50 minutes

Poster Sessions

Description: Presenters use posters and audio-visual aids to present a summary of a paper rather than reading a prepared paper. Individual presenters are assigned to numbered bulletin boards in a large meeting room where they have the opportunity for individualized, informal discussion of research throughout a 2-hour session. Because of the physical configuration of the room, no additional audio-visual equipment can be utilized (such as a screen or an overhead projector). You may, however, use a laptop to present PowerPoint-type presentation.

 Presentation Time: 2 hours

Corporate Demonstrations/Literature

Description: Demonstrations allow presenters to discuss a company’s products, services, developments, applications and research. They also provide a forum for gaining feedback, establishing contacts and presenting information of a company’s future directions.

 Presentation Time: 2 hours

Abstracts with home and school/agency address MUST be postmarked, faxed, or emailed by:
Friday, November 6, 2009.
